Your Data - Your Choice

The Tempus Period Tracker for Teens is first and foremost a privacy driven app, with no ongoing subscriptions, the data remains in the user’s control and contains no advertising or social media integration and does not require the child or parent to provide personally identifiable information to use.

Why is this important?

Data sharing and Data Security:

Tempus only stores data on the local device, it does not store any data (health, user or error logging) in the cloud. As a result, it is impossible for Tempus staff to access or share your data as it simply does not exist outside your control. Having the data in your control and not floating around the cloud, significantly reduces but does not totally eliminate your risk to security vunerabilities. We also recommend securing your device with password, pin or facial recognition to further secure all data on your device.

Personal identification:

Tempus does not require any personal identifiers (real name or email, etc) to be entered to be able to use the app, in fact it's not even asked for. To use the app, you only need to provide an avatar name, which can be anything you like and your age. Your age is used only for the purposes of requiring a parent or guardian to review and accept the terms and conditions if the user is under 13.

Stigma and discrimination:

Tempus uses a gender neutral design palette, language and design. As part of the user creation, you will be prompted to your preference of pronouns. This preference will change the language used in some of the content packs to alternate between gender specific vs gender neutral language.

How does Tempus address these concerns?

With both children's privacy and particularly reproductive privacy hitting the news in recent times, there are some privacy concerns with period tracking apps that people should be aware of. These are:

  • Data sharing: Some period tracking apps may share users' data with third-party advertisers or other companies. This can include sensitive information such as menstrual cycle dates, symptoms, and fertility information.

  • Personal identification: Some period tracking apps may require users to enter personal information such as their name, address, or date of birth. This can potentially identify them if the app's data is breached or shared without their consent.

  • Security vulnerabilities: Period tracking apps can be vulnerable to security breaches, which can result in users' sensitive information being accessed by unauthorized parties.

  • Stigma and discrimination: Period tracking apps may inadvertently perpetuate stigma and discrimination against people who menstruate. For example, some apps may use language that reinforces gender stereotypes or assumes that all users are cisgender women.

Regardless of the period tracker people use, generally users should:

  1. Read the app's privacy policy and terms of service carefully before using it.

  2. Look for apps that use end-to-end encryption and other security measures to protect users' data in transit.

  3. Use a pseudonym or nickname instead of their real name when creating an account.

  4. Avoid entering sensitive information such as their address, date of birth, or phone number.

  5. Be mindful of the language and assumptions used by the app, and look for apps that are inclusive and respectful of all users.

Health data and Content stored locally

No internet connection is required once app is downloaded.

No personal identifiers are required to use the app, only an avatar name and age is needed to identify multiple users sharing a single device, e.g. in a family.

Anonymous by design. Your data exists only on your device and no one else including Tempus can access, view, sell or analyse your personal data.

Tempus does not track your activity and it contains no advertising.

Tempus - First Period Tracker - At A Glance

Tempus only saves your data on the device on which it was installed.

When the app is uninstalled, or via settings you clear the app cache/data, this data is deleted.

It's that simple.

How do I delete my data?
iCloud and Android Backups

Depending on your device, you may have a backup solution automatically backing up your phone to your backup provider, e.g. iCloud on an iPhone.

This is generally a system wide setting and Tempus along with any other app on your phone may be backed up by this process. This data remains in your control, though if you are concerned with this data being in your backup, you can configure the backup to exclude the Tempus app from backup.

How do I move the data to another device?

As your data is only on your device, it is a manual process to export your data from one device to another if desired. Once the export file is created, this data is not kept in sync between devices.

This can be accomplished by using the import/export function under system settings.

If Tempus doesn't sell data or have advertising how does it make money?

After your free 30 day trial to confirm that Tempus will work for you, you will be prompted to upgrade the app via an in app purchase when you go to log your period or symptoms. This is a once off app upgrade and helps support the continued development of Tempus.

This approach is inline with our personal belief, in that, we prefer to pay for an app once, rather than be the product ourselves or be bombarded with advertising constantly.

For content, these are purchased individually within Tempus and are a once off in app purchase. Once purchased these are your to use for the life of the app.
